The island of Bali is the main destination for diving activities. There are several famous diving spots in Bali, with the beauty of the underwater scenery.
1. Nusa Penida
Location: Nusa Penida Island, Klungkung
Nusa Penida, an island near Bali offers a fantastic opportunity to dive with mola-mola (the oceanic sunfish) and manta rays, two of the most remarkable large creatures to swim within the ocean. It is so fantastic for diving around Nusa Penida, the highlights are the incredible cleaning station at Manta Point and swimming with mola-mola at Crystal Bay. This little neighbor to Bali has a lot more diving to offer than sunfish and manta rays. The mola-mola appears similar to a fish head with a tail, and its main body is flattened laterally. Manta rays are large rays belonging to the genus Manta. The larger species, M. birostris, reach up to 7 meters in width. Both these animals can be very large and make fantastic photo subjects! If you remain calm and swim slowly they can come very close!
2. Tulamben
Location: Kubu, Karangasem, East Bali
Tulamben is a quiet village on the northeast coast of Bali, facing the Lombok Strait. Divers occasionally meet mola-mola sunfish, hammerhead sharks and whale sharks in the waters of Tulamben. Its biodiversity and location make Tulamben one of the best dive sites in the world. Complete with its own wreck, the USAT Liberty, which sank in 1963 when Gunung Agung erupted, the easy access to this wreck adds to the village’s charm. The wreck is also home to a group of bumphead parrotfish. The dive site in the Coral Garden can be found at a depth of 2-15 meters, which is overgrown by various amazing hard and soft corals. Besides that this place can also be found a variety of beautiful small reef fish and blue-yellow moray ribbon eels. This dive site is also a great place to snorkel. In this location, you can see various natural coral reef biota. Squid, cuttlefish are just a few thousands of biota that can be found here. Small white snout sharks are also often found in shallow water in this location.
3. Padang Bai
Location: Manggis, Karangasem, East Bali
A great highlight in Padangbai for beach lovers is Blue Lagoon, a small bay northeast of the seaport with only a 60m stretch of white sand, from which you can snorkel right off. Divers take a five-minute boat ride from Padang Bai to a dive spot of the same name, where large Napoleon wrasse, several kinds of reef shark, stonefish, moray, and blue ribbon eels, nudibranchs, rays, squids and octopuses, giant frogfish and cuttlefish are among the marine diversity. Another beach often dubbed a ‘hidden beach’ due to its location between small hilly capes, is Bias Tugel, a 130m long strip southwest of the Padang Bai port, and which also offers calm and blue waters most times of the year. Here you can relax on the even sand or under shades of parasols with beach loungers. The beach that shares the bay with the seaport is not so busy, especially on its eastern end, and you can also enjoy fairly good swimming and snorkeling here, too.
4. Menjangan Island
Location: Pejarakan, Gerokgak, Buleleng Regency
Menjangan island is really great for small and medium fishes but you won’t see lots of big pelagic fishes. However, you can spot the blacktip and whitetip reef sharks and Manta rays at certain times of the year. A very nice diving site around Menjangan Island is the Anker wreck, a 150-year-old wooden boat lying on the sea bed around 40 meters deep. Diving in Menjangan is also very rewarding for beginners. Especially due to the fact that the current is very light and the visibility is usually very good and can even be outstanding (50m +).
